Dynamic Dates

If you’ve been using PortfolioCenter since the pre-email stone age (like me), you are accustomed to updating the date ranges on the report settings virtually every time you want to run reports.

When Schwab Performance Technologies introduced Presentation Studio reports, they gave us something new: Dynamic Date ranges.

What’s the difference? If you wish to run a traditional PortfolioCenter report on the first quarter of 2013, you must manually enter the beginning value 12/31/2012 and the ending value 03/31/2013 in the report settings.

In Presentation Studio, you can specify that the report be run on the “Current Quarter”.  It will figure out the appropriate dates based on the as of date.

There are currently 14 Dynamic Date Range collections in Presentation Studio:

  • Quarter to Date, Year to Date, Inception to Date (3 time periods)
  • Quarter to Date, Year to Date, Last 12 Months (3 time periods)
  • Quarter to Date, Year to Date, Last 5 Years (3 time periods)
  • Last 3 Months, Last 12 Months, Last 5 Years (3 time periods)
  • Last 3 Months, Last 12 Months, Inception to Date (3 time periods)
  • Quarter to Date, Last 12 Months/3 Years/5 Years (whichever is longest for that portfolio), Inception to Date (3 time periods)
  • Quarter to Date, Year to Date, Last 3 Years, Last 5 Years, Inception to Date (5 time periods)
  • Quarter to Date, Year to Date, Last 2 Years, Last 3 Years, Last 4 Years, Last 5 Years, Last 10 Years (7 time periods)
  • Quarter to date (1 time period)
  • Last 3 Months (1 time period)
  • Last 12 Months (1 time period)
  • Inception to Date (1 time period)
  • Each calendar year back to Inception, starting with the last year end (up to 7 time periods)
  • Annual back to Inception, starting with the last month end (up to 7 time periods)

Not all options are available on all Presentation Studio reports.  Check the drop down menus in report setup for the reports you’re interested to see what’s available on that report.

PortfolioCenter omits time periods when a portfolio does not have enough historical data.  For example if a portfolio has only 7 months of data, neither the 3 nor 5 year time periods will display.

If two ranges would display the same numbers, you must specify which you wish to print.  For example on March 31, Current Quarter and Year to Date would print the same data.  If you specify “Keep First”, Current quarter would print.  If you specify “Keep Last”, year to date would print.
